Kennesaw State professor uses speed, crash data to better understand how to protect school children

A Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ professor is studying whether school zones in Georgia are made safer through automated speed enforcement. Sunanda Dissanayake, professor of civil engineering, is gathering data on determining the effectiveness of automated speed enforcement near schools, then analyzing that data to offer recommendations that help to create guidelines for local governments and transportation authorities.

Kennesaw State to launch Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering degree program

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia today approved a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering degree program at Ñý¼§Ö±²¥, beginning in the Fall 2025 semester. Housed within the Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SPCEET), the new degree program becomes just the second of its kind in Georgia and helps address the workforce demands of a rapidly growing industry.

Seeking refuge in Savannah, Georgia, Caelyn Summers sat anxiously in her childhood home last September while Hurricane Helene rumbled across the state before turning north toward the Blue Ridge Mountains. One of the deadliest storms in two decades, the Category 4 hurricane killed more than 200 people and left Summers without power for nearly four days. Among the images that stood out the most were those of Asheville, North Carolina, where she spent many family vacations over the years. Perhaps unsurprisingly, she leapt at the opportunity to be one of about two dozen Ñý¼§Ö±²¥students to make the four-hour drive to Asheville in January to survey Helene damage and meet with community members to discuss recovery efforts.

Supported by a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant, Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ assistant professor Ashish Aphale and a team of students are sparking innovation in the field of clean energy through their work on novel materials for energy storage and conversion systems. This research aims to study the influence of hydrogen on the growth of metal oxide nanostructures, with the goal of enhancing electrode performance in energy storage devices.

As the first person in her family to attend college in the United States, Andrea Martinez Angulo has long been imbued with a tireless work ethic. It was instilled in her by her parents, who brought her to the U.S. from Jalisco, Mexico at 4 years old as her father pursued his career ambitions, and it continued as she was introduced to STEM as a student at Kennesaw Mountain High School. Today, she is well on her way to breaking new ground in robotics as a student in Ñý¼§Ö±²¥â€™s Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology.
